MISSION:

Mugs for Moms exists to raise awareness about perinatal mood and anxiety disorders and create community engagement opportunities to help provide resources and support for moms that may be suffering. We believe that a simple mug can be powerful and serve as a daily reminder that we can all be helpful in our communities to support moms and parents of all kinds by trying to have more compassion for ourselves and for those who may be suffering from mental illness. Our goal at Mugs for Moms is to provide safe and creative spaces for moms, expectant moms, hopeful moms, non-birthing people and partners to build community, engage in art therapy, share stories and learn about other outlets and resources in maternal health and perinatal mental health. We are artists, healers, advocates and survivors ourselves. We hope that by offering opportunities to create, connect and educate, we will strengthen our community of parents and offer valuable and life saving resources to those in need.

OUR STORY:

Mugs with a message: Mugs for Moms was founded by potter and postpartum anxiety and depression survivor, Maria White. In 2019, White and a group of ceramic artists and collaborators from Charleston, SC along with other makers from across the United States, created and donated over 100 mugs for the first Mugs for Moms event. The goal was to help fight the stigma surrounding maternal mental illness and help raise awareness. This event benefited a local nonprofit committed to helping moms and who suffer from perinatal mood and anxiety disorders, Postpartum Support Charleston. The second event in 2021 also benefited Postpartum Support International and once again, brought together a community of makers, healers, survivors and advocates. In 2022, we have partnered with MUSC Arts in Healing to provide art therapy at our Muddy Meetups and are raising awareness and funds for Mom’s IMPACTT, a program that provides on-demand mental health treatment and resources for pregnant and postpartum people and real-time psychiatric consultations for providers. Our hope is that similar Mugs for Moms events will emerge in other cities and towns to help more moms and their families get the help they need. Mugs for Moms is a non-profit 501 (c)(3) organization.
